What Social Media Actually Does to a Teenager’s Sleep

Every sleep consultant who works with families of older children and teenagers has heard some version of the same story. The child cannot fall asleep. The child wakes up tired. The child’s mood is off. Somewhere in that story, a phone sits on or near the bed.

A 2024 scoping review titled “The Impact of Social Media Use on Sleep and Mental Health in Youth,” published in Current Psychiatry Reports by Yu, Wing, Li and Chan, brings together 33 studies published between January 2020 and July 2023. The review offers the most current and well-organized picture of what the research says about social media, sleep and mental health in young people.

Sixteen out of seventeen studies agree

Of the 33 studies in the review, 26 were cross-sectional and seven were longitudinal cohort studies. Sample sizes ranged from 54 participants to more than 195,000.

Seventeen cross-sectional studies looked at social media use and sleep. Of these, 16 found a significant association. Young people who used social media more had later bedtimes, took longer to fall asleep, slept for shorter periods and reported worse sleep quality. Only one small study of 101 undergraduate students did not find an overall negative effect. But even there, the subgroup analysis told a different story: young people with higher levels of depressive symptoms were at greater risk of experiencing negative sleep effects from bedtime social media use.

The longitudinal evidence points in the same direction. Of three cohort studies examining social media and sleep, two found that higher levels of social media use predicted later bedtimes and shorter sleep duration after one to two years of follow-up. Richardson and colleagues found that the relationship may work in both directions. Teenagers with an evening chronotype preference and shorter sleep duration tended to use social media for longer periods. Any experienced sleep consultant will recognize this cycle. The child who cannot sleep picks up the phone, and the phone makes sleep even harder.

A third cohort study by Maksniemi and colleagues followed 426 young people aged 13 to 19 and did not find a significant overall association between social media use and bedtime. But the subgroup analysis told a more nuanced story: a significant association was observed in early adolescence (at ages 13 and 14), but not in middle or late adolescence. Younger teenagers appear more affected, which makes early intervention with this age group particularly worthwhile.

Hyperarousal, blue light and stolen time

The review identifies three mechanisms behind the problem. These three explanations are simple enough to share with any parent, and they carry the weight of science behind them.

The first is hyperarousal. When a young person scrolls through social media, sends messages or checks notifications before bed, the brain becomes more alert. This is not the same as watching television. Interactive media, where the person is responding, typing and reacting, creates more arousal than passive screen time. One finding stood out: phone conversations before bed were associated with longer sleep duration, not shorter. The authors suggest that talking to a friend may promote emotional calm, but social media triggers reactions like FOMO (fear of missing out) and stress.

The second is blue light. Screens emit blue light at a wavelength of around 480 nanometers. This particular wavelength suppresses melatonin, the hormone that signals the body to prepare for sleep. Some young people may be more sensitive to this effect than others. Children of parents with bipolar affective disorder, for example, may have lower baseline levels of nocturnal melatonin. Screen light before bed could affect them even more.

The third is time displacement. This one is simple. Every minute spent on social media before or during the sleep window is a minute not spent sleeping.

These three mechanisms do not work in isolation. A teenager scrolling through social media at 11 p.m. is simultaneously experiencing hyperarousal, melatonin suppression and time loss. Together, they form a triple hit against sleep.

Sleep is the bridge between screens and mood

Seven studies in the review measured social media use, sleep and mental health together. Five of these found significant three-way associations. Sleep appears to act as a mediating factor. Social media affects sleep, and poor sleep then affects mental health.

Li and colleagues (2022) demonstrated this directly. Their study showed that sleep mediated the negative effects of social media use on emotional symptoms in adolescents. The review authors’ own clinical research supports this: a brief insomnia prevention program, adapted from cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia, significantly reduced the severity of depressive symptoms at 12-month follow-up.

Think about what that means in practice. When you help a young person sleep better, you may be doing more than fixing a sleep problem. You may be protecting their mental health at the same time.

The mental health data from these studies shows associations between greater social media use and increased depression, self-harm and lower self-esteem. Prior meta-analyses put the effect sizes at small to medium (ranging from -0.11 to -0.32). Social media is one contributing factor among many, not the sole cause. That distinction is worth keeping in mind when talking with worried parents.

Who is at greatest risk?

Younger adolescents, as the Maksniemi subgroup analysis showed, are more affected at ages 13 and 14 than older teenagers. Two cohort studies conducted in the USA and China found that frequent and problematic social media use was significantly associated with later mental health problems. In the USA study, a notable sex difference emerged: only girls showed a worsening mental health trajectory linked to social media use (β = 0.23, p < 0.05). Boys did not show the same pattern. If you work with families of teenage girls who report both mood and sleep difficulties, this finding deserves attention.

Young people who already have depressive symptoms, those with an evening chronotype preference and those exposed to cyberbullying through social media are all at higher risk. The review reports that cyberbullying victimization rates among children and adolescents range from 14% to 57.5% worldwide. Meta-analyses confirm its link to depression, self-harm, suicidal attempts and suicidal ideation.

Putting the science to work

The review aligns its recommendations with the American Academy of Pediatrics (2016) guidelines and WHO guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behavior. Both recommend limiting recreational screen time and avoiding social media use for at least one hour before bed.

The three-mechanism framework (hyperarousal, blue light and time displacement) gives you a simple and credible way to explain the problem to families. Instead of telling parents “screens are bad,” you can show them exactly what the screen does to their child’s ability to fall asleep. That kind of explanation is much harder to dismiss.

Active social media use (messaging, posting, responding to others) is more stimulating than passive watching. A blanket ban on all screens may not always be necessary or realistic. Recommending no interactive social media for one hour before bed is a more targeted approach, and families are more likely to follow through with it.

The bidirectional relationship in the research deserves a place in your conversations with parents too. A child who already has difficulty sleeping may be using the phone to cope with lying awake. Simply removing the phone without addressing the underlying sleep difficulty creates frustration without solving anything.

Parental rules about internet use before sleep had a protective role in one longitudinal study (van den Eijnden and colleagues). This supports the idea that family-level screen boundaries can make a difference. But rules alone are unlikely to succeed without education and genuine agreement from the young person. Top-down control without buy-in rarely sticks.

Not all social media effects are negative either. During the COVID-19 pandemic, young people in Australia and the UK used social media to manage external stress and to seek support for self-harm and suicidal thoughts. The conversation with families should focus on managing social media use around sleep, not on treating every minute of screen time as a threat.

This 2024 review by Yu, Wing, Li and Chan provides a well-supported and current synthesis of the evidence. Social media use is consistently linked to worse sleep in young people. Poor sleep, in turn, affects their mental health. The most practical step any sleep consultant can take with these families is to explain why the last hour before bed needs to be screen-free, and to help them make that change in a way the young person can accept and sustain.
