A New Approach to Healthier Sleep and Development in Toddlers

There is growing recognition that toddlers benefit from movement and music, not just for fun but for their overall development. A new study publish in November 2024, the MoviMusi Project, is investigating how a structured program of movement and music can influence young children’s physical activity, sleep habits, and motor and musical skills. Here is what the study aims to discover and why it matters for sleep consultants and early childhood educators.

Why Movement and Music Together?

This project stems from the belief that physical activity combined with music supports a child’s development in various ways. Research suggests that young children who engage in regular movement and musical activities often show improvements in both physical and cognitive skills. This study is unique because it combines these two elements to evaluate if they can improve overall health, behavior, and sleep quality in children aged 1 to 3 years.

What Is MoviMusi Doing?

The MoviMusi study is a long-term project involving early childhood education centers across three Spanish cities. Here is a breakdown of the plan:

  1. Centers are split into two groups. One follows the new movement and music program while the other continues with their usual activities.
  2. Over the course of two years, researchers will measure the impact of this program by assessing:
    • Physical activity levels – using accelerometers, they will track how much time children spend being active versus sedentary.
    • Motor and musical skills – evaluators will look at how children’s abilities develop in areas like fine motor skills (small movements) and gross motor skills (larger movements like running).
    • Sleep patterns – parents and teachers will keep track of how well children sleep, including nap quality and nighttime sleep.
  3. Observers will also watch children during outdoor play to see how they engage in physical activity and music-based activities in real-world settings.

What Makes This Study Unique?

The MoviMusi project focuses not only on the direct impact of these activities but also on the perceptions of everyone involved—educators, parents, and even local educational authorities. Here is how each group is involved:

  • The study includes interviews and focus groups with educators and parents to understand what helps or hinders movement and music activities in childcare settings and at home. This approach allows them to share their thoughts on what is practical or challenging in integrating these activities into everyday life.
  • By working directly with early childhood centers and parents, the program adapts to each center’s needs, making it more likely that activities will be embraced and continue after the study.

Practical points

  • Regular physical activity can improve sleep quality, even in very young children. For sleep consultants, this connection suggests that encouraging some form of daily activity—whether through structured play or free movement—can benefit children’s sleep routines.
  • Integrating music with movement can make exercise more appealing for children. Music engages children, holds their attention, and helps them enjoy the activity, which could lead to a more consistent routine.
  • The study’s approach shows that every family and educational setting is different. For sleep consultants and educators, this reinforces the importance of creating flexible, inclusive strategies that fit a child’s unique lifestyle.

What to Watch for in the Future

The MoviMusi Project is an ongoing study, but its findings could provide valuable insights for early childhood education and pediatric sleep. If successful, the program could serve as a model for other early childhood centers worldwide, offering a practical, research-backed approach to supporting children’s development through music and movement. For now, this study reminds us that even small, enjoyable activities like dancing and playing can make a real difference in children’s health, happiness, and growth.
